If you’re relocating to Maine or recently made the move, one of the easiest ways to save money may be something many new residents overlook: your E-ZPass account.
Although E-ZPass works seamlessly across much of the eastern United States, the state that issued your E-ZPass account—not your state of residence—determines whether you receive discounted toll rates.
For thousands of drivers traveling the Maine Turnpike each year, that distinction can mean paying significantly more than necessary.
Maine Offers Two Toll Rates
MTA offers a Maine E-ZPass rate and cash rate for cash for customers.
The Maine Turnpike Authority (MTA) provides two pricing levels for passenger vehicles:
- Cash Toll Rate
- Maine E-ZPass Rate (Discounted)
Drivers using an E-ZPass issued by another state can drive through Maine’s electronic toll lanes without any problem. However, those transponders are generally charged the same rate as paying cash.
To receive Maine’s discounted E-ZPass tolls, motorists must open a Maine-issued E-ZPass account.
"Many people are surprised to learn that the discounts they receive depend on where their E‑ZPass account is issued. For new Mainers and frequent travelers, opening a Maine E‑ZPass account save real money when traveling on the turnpike—especially once they start qualifying for monthly volume discounts.
We've seen customers achieve significant savings each year when they make the switch to Maine E-ZPass. We just want people to know they have this option, and that opening an account here in Maine is a simple step that can keep more money in their pocket as they navigate the many expenses that come with a move.” says, Samantha Kaherl, Kaherl, Director of Maine E-Z Pass Operations for Maine Turnpike Authority.
Residency Doesn’t Matter
One of the biggest misconceptions among newcomers is believing they must maintain an E-ZPass account from the state where they previously lived.
In reality, your residency does not determine eligibility for a Maine E-ZPass account.
Anyone who regularly drives the Maine Turnpike can open a Maine E-ZPass account to take advantage of the state’s discounted toll rates.
For commuters, frequent travelers, and seasonal visitors who make regular trips between southern and central Maine, the savings can add up quickly over the course of a year.
Planning Your Savings
Whether you’re commuting to Portland for work, visiting family every weekend, or heading to Maine’s beaches during the summer, it’s worth comparing your potential savings.
The Maine Turnpike Authority offers an online Toll Calculator that allows drivers to estimate costs for specific trips and compare toll rates.
Can You Have More Than One E-ZPass?
Yes.
Drivers are permitted to maintain E-ZPass accounts issued by multiple states. However, doing so requires a little extra attention.
Each vehicle should only expose the transponder intended for that trip.
If multiple active transponders are visible inside the vehicle, the tolling system may detect more than one device, potentially resulting in duplicate toll charges.
When traveling on the Maine Turnpike, the Maine Turnpike Authority recommends displaying only your Maine E-ZPass transponder. Any additional transponders should be placed inside their protective shield bag before entering the toll plaza.
Preventing duplicate charges is the responsibility of the customer.
A Simple Step That Can Save Money
For many people moving to Maine, updating vehicle registrations, driver’s licenses, insurance policies, and utility accounts often takes priority.
Adding a Maine-issued E-ZPass to that checklist can be another smart financial move—especially if you’ll be using the Maine Turnpike regularly.
A few minutes spent opening a Maine E-ZPass account could lead to meaningful savings every time you travel Maine’s primary north-south highway.
