In a town undergoing a remarkable renaissance, the Maine Grain Alliance (MGA) continues to serve as both catalyst and cultural heartbeat. With a mission to “inspire and empower people who are building local grain economies,” MGA is helping revitalize rural Maine through education, community events, and a deep commitment to honoring grain traditions from earth to table.
A Vision Rooted in Local Resilience
At its core, the Maine Grain Alliance envisions a world where local grain economies thrive—supporting farmers, millers, bakers, brewers, and everyday consumers. Based in Skowhegan, the organization has played a central role in reshaping the narrative around grain production in Maine, proving that ancient practices and modern innovation can coexist.
Their flagship initiative, The Kneading Conference, returns to Skowhegan from July 23-25, 2025, drawing farmers, bakers, chefs, brewers, grain researchers, and food lovers from across the country. This unique gathering fosters hands-on learning in everything from baking artisan bread and brewing to stone milling and wood-fired oven building.
“The Kneading Conference is where curiosity meets craft,” said an MGA spokesperson. “It’s a celebration of the people who are growing, grinding, fermenting, and firing up the ovens—all while building stronger local food systems.”
The conference has not only become a national draw for grain enthusiasts, but also an economic driver for the Skowhegan region—bringing tourism, small business collaboration, and national visibility to a revitalized downtown now anchored by developments like the Spinning Mill.
Introducing the Portland Bread Crawl
In 2025, the Maine Grain Alliance is also expanding its reach with the launch of the Portland Bread Crawl, a self-guided tasting tour that showcases the city's standout bakeries, pizzerias, and pastry artisans. Participants will embark on a flavorful journey through five top establishments, including:
- ZU Bakery
- Flatbread Co.
- Ugly Duckling
- A surprise bakery to be announced
- …and an after-party hosted by Night Moves Bread
Each stop will feature tastings and behind-the-scenes insight into the baking craft, offering a unique opportunity to connect with the passionate makers behind Maine’s rising bread culture.

With its dynamic programming and grassroots energy, MGA continues to strengthen Maine’s grain economy and community ties.
