Maine's Iconic 207 Area Code Secured Until 2045 (Live in Maine )

Maine's singular area code, 207, is projected to remain in service until at least 2045, according to a recent forecast by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA). This extension provides nearly two additional decades before the state might require a second area code.

The Maine Public Utilities Commission (PUC) attributes this longevity to proactive conservation measures. Efforts such as collaborating with telecommunications providers to optimize number allocation and implementing rate center consolidation have significantly reduced the demand for new numbers. These strategies have effectively delayed the exhaustion of the 207 area code.

"The 207 area code is a valuable asset to Maine residents and businesses alike," stated PUC Chair Philip L. Bartlett II. "This extension gives us nearly 20 more years before a second area code could be necessary—a welcome milestone that reflects years of proactive work by Commission staff."

While 207 remains Maine's sole area code, it's noteworthy that certain northern communities, such as Estcourt Station, utilize area codes from neighboring Quebec due to their proximity and infrastructure connections.

This development ensures that Maine's residents and businesses can continue to identify with the 207 area code, preserving a unique aspect of the state's identity for the foreseeable future.
