Maine Counties See Higher Unemployment Rates Than National Average (featured)

Several counties in Maine are experiencing higher-than-average unemployment rates, according to the latest data. Aroostook, Franklin, Hancock, Piscataquis, Somerset, and Washington counties all reported unemployment rates exceeding the national average, signaling ongoing economic challenges in these areas.

Statewide, Maine’s nonfarm job market has remained relatively stable, with 658,600 wage and salary jobs reported in the most recent estimates. While the total number of jobs has seen a slight decline from the revised January figures, employment levels have remained within 0.1% of the average over the past eight months.

Compared to the previous year, Maine gained 2,800 jobs, averaging 200 new jobs per month, particularly in early 2024. The strongest job growth was recorded in leisure and hospitality, retail trade, healthcare and social assistance, and construction—industries that continue to drive employment opportunities across the state.

Despite these gains, the higher-than-average unemployment rates in select counties highlight the regional disparities in Maine’s labor market. Economic conditions vary across the state, and ongoing efforts to create sustainable employment opportunities will be essential for boosting workforce participation in these affected areas.
