Maine, known for its breathtaking landscapes and winter charm, offers more than 14,500 miles of scenic snowmobile trails-a true wonderland for snowmobiling enthusiasts. From winding forest paths to open, snow-covered fields, the state provides an unparalleled experience for riders of all levels.

Ride Right in Maine: Guidelines for Safe Snowmobiling

To ensure everyone enjoys the trails responsibly, Maine’s snowmobiling community emphasizes a key motto: United we trail, divided we fail!” The Maine Snowmobile Association (MSA)encourages riders to follow these six essential guidelines:

1. Ride to the right: Stay on your side of the trail to avoid collisions.

2. Ride sober :Avoid alcohol and drugs while on the trails.

3. Ride at a reasonable speed :Adjust your speed to match trail conditions and visibility.

4. Stay on the marked trails: Protect the environment and respect private property.

5. Use hand signals: Communicate your intentions to other riders.

6. Ride defensively: Expect the unexpected and be ready to react.

While these rules provide a strong foundation, the MSA also recommends taking additional steps to maximize safety and enjoyment on the trails.

Snowmobile Safety Courses: Learn Before You Ride

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IF&W) offers certified snowmobile safety courses designed to equip riders with essential skills and knowledge. The courses cover everything from handling techniques to emergency procedures, ensuring snowmobilers are prepared for any situation.

The MSA also provides a Ride Right – Ride Smart course booklet, which offers practical advice and safety tips tailored to Maine’s unique trails.

Sharing the Trails

Maine’s snowmobile trails are shared with various users, including hikers and skiers. If you encounter others on the trail, the MSA advises slowing down and passing with caution and courtesy to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone.
