Electric vehicles (EVs) and green energy solutions are becoming increasingly popular in the United States. Government support through tax incentives and infrastructure investments is growing. Consumer interest in sustainable living is also on the rise. As a result, the EV market is expanding rapidly. Despite this trend, some still question the viability of EVs in the Northeast, especially in rural and cold-weather areas. Concerns focus on winter performance, range limitations, and charging infrastructure.
Myths about EVs in the Northeast
Myth 1: EV performance in winter is severely limiting
While colder conditions do affect battery performance, the impact is manageable and often overblown. Jesse Lore, the founder of Green Wave EV, explains, “the coldest weather is going to cut 30% of your range, so if you have a car with 250 miles range, now you’re looking at 175 miles. Most people drive less than 30 miles a day, so that’s still going to meet the needs of most drivers.”
Myth 2: EV range isn’t suitable for rural New England
While it’s true that longer ranges come with higher price tags, most people will find that standard-range EVs suffice for daily use. “For the vast majority of people, EVs are going to save them a ton of money and totally meet their daily driving needs,” says Lore. “People have to think about how much they actually drive every day. If you’re somebody who does need to drive 200 miles a day in January, sometimes it’s a Real Estate Agent or somebody who’s in commercial sales going from appointment to appointment. There are vehicles to meet their needs, just more expensive. If you want a 320 or 400 mile range vehicle, you’re going to be spending $60-$70,000 and you also have some 300-mile options like the Tesla Model Y, and the Tesla Supercharger Network is great.”
Myth 3: Charging infrastructure isn’t there yet
Green Wave EV helps resolve the anxiety of charging by offering home charging solutions and providing information about the growing network of public charging stations. They ensure that new EV owners are well-equipped and informed, making the transition smoother. Lore also showed us PlugShare and all the public options ready and available in the area.

Myth 4: Battery longevity is an issue
Modern EVs, with sophisticated battery management systems that ensure the car doesn't overcharge or undercharge have largely erased this concern. Lore emphasizes, “These batteries are lasting a lot longer than expected, with a remarkably slow deterioration rate.” With regular battery health reports from partners like Recurrent Automotive, Green Wave EV provides transparency and data-driven knowledge to their customers. “Recurrent has all this first party data and it’s really incredible what this data is showing. Some of these vehicles, their expected range today is actually better than their EPA range, what they were tested for. And that's what Recurrent is seeing, and they're sharing some of that data out, then it tells you what your expected range will be assuming 12 to 15,000 miles a year because they see these vehicles and they see how much their batteries deteriorate.”
Even after debunking some common misconceptions about electric cars, you may still wonder: “Are electric cars still worth it?” The answer depends on what you prioritize when choosing a car. Eco-consciousness and saving money on gas are significant motivators for many people to switch to electric vehicles, and the technology is continually improving. Electric cars offer lower emissions, reduced fuel costs, and often lower maintenance expenses compared to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. Additionally, advancements in battery technology are extending the range and reducing charging times, making electric cars more convenient. While you may not be ready to transition to an electric car now, it’s worth considering one for your next vehicle as the benefits continue to grow.
